Coaxial RF connectors introduced in the 1960s are known as SMC (SubMiniature version C) connectors. MIL-STD-348 refers to the interface requirements for the SMC and a number of other connectors. They have a threaded interface with the number #10-32 UNF (screw type). Electrical performance is available from DC to 10 GHz with SMC connectors. The center contact on male (Plug) SMC connectors is a socket, whereas the center contact on female (Jack) SMC connectors is a pin. External threads are found on SMC jack connectors, whereas matching hex nuts are found on SMC plug connectors. They provide a connecting mechanism for tiny form factor coaxial cables (e.g. 50-Ohm RG-174, 75-Ohm RG-179) and printed circuit boards with a small footprint.
